i've a young male patient who passed away yesterday.
pronouced dead @ 2.56pm (3rd april 2008). i did nursed him quite a few times before i went on leave. din mention about him in blog before.

He was 1 of the few "problematic" patients, i would say. i guess it's all because of his illness, relapse leukemias, that's why. they usually loses their motivation to fight on, but not all relapse patients are like that thou. When i was nursing him, he was already prescribed capsule etoposide & hydroxyurea (oral chemo medication), medications to lower his white cells counts, which was way above normal range. based on his blood results everyday, i assumed he had taken his oral chemo medication, because his white cells counts was dropping, which was what we wanted. jus on the day when his white cells counts started raising agn, one of our staffs found a tissue box on his bed, fill with medications. All his medications were not taken, which include the most important life saving chemo drugs. That really alerted our doctors, nursing staffs, even the medical social worker who came to counsel him.

u would hav asked,- why arent the nursing staffs monitoring him taking his medications instead of leaving it on his table and walk off. it's because he wouldnt like it if u questioned him if he had taken his medication, what more to ask him to swallow them in front of u. the most difficult task ever.

2 days ago, when i walked into the nursing officier room, i saw 1 cup of colourful medications. i knew who the medication belonged to without asking.

i din xpect his condition to deteriorate so fast. it was a shocked. when i came on duty today, i heard that he was not able to make it thru the day. his blood pressure was onli 47/21! he took his last breath @ 2.56pm.

i din manage to see him before he left for the mortuary. was too busy then. it was kinda sad.

He told us once, he believed his illness will never be cured. he refuses treatment, refuses chemo, refuses bone marrow transplant. He loses his motivation to fight on. i was just thinking, if he would hav taken those chemo drugs, at least, he would be still breathing now. but well, we respect patient's decision. although, what i really hope for, is for all sick ppl to continue fighting on!! keep on the fighting  spirits!
